Benvinguts a Catalunya! Welcome to Catalonia! Joel Ristol, aka @1.63dart shares this beautifully detailed model of a landmark in his native Catalonia.  The Carthusian Monastery of Saint Mary of Scala Dei (Cartoixa de Santa Maria d'Escaladei, in Catalonian) is a monastery founded in the 1100's in the Montsant mountains of Catalonia, northeastern Spain, by French monks of the Order of Chartreux (Charterhouse in English, Cartoixa in Catalonian, Cartuja in Castillian) being the first monastery this order built in the Iberian peninsula. The Catalonian name "Escaladei" comes from Latin "Scala Dei" meaning "God's ladder", due to the legend of the foundation of the monastery on the location of a shepherd's vision of angels descending from heaven using a ladder.  For seven centuries, the monks worked the land, developed farming techniques, and established a strong viticulture that eventually gave the region its current fame and prestige as wine country. In the early 1800's, the monks abandoned the monastery and fled due to cultural and legislation changes targeting certain religious groups. The monastery quickly fell into ruin as mobs sacked and burned it. Today, it is a historical attraction and landmark of the Priorat region (from Priorat Tourism).
