This is the tomb stone of Duchess of Milan, Bona of Savoy. Italian Renaissance art is mostly inspired by Etruscan funeral art from the 4th century B.C. Indeed, Etruscans are those who implemented as a custom to sculpt the body of the deceased upon his grave or sarcophagus. If this custom tended to disappear during the Middle Ages after the fall of the Roman Empire, it came back with the Italian Renaissance when artists seeked inspiration in the glorious Roman past.
