Putti, depicted as participants of a Bacchanale, or used as allegories for the Seasons, and symbols of the more abstract love, hate, war and peace, were a popular type of iconography in the Netherlands. Particularly renowned within the oeuvre of such sculptors as Artus Quellinus (1609-1668) and François Duquesnoy (1597-1643), the type continued to be popular during the eighteenth century.
