The scarification patterns on the shoulders and upper arms of this woman were a popular form of body ornament. Painful ordeals were part of puberty and initiation ceremonies marking the transition from adolescence and adulthood. The patterns on her breasts probably copy the designs that were traced on the skin with charcoal and mineral pigments. Excavated in Jalisco
