This is onz of the numerous commissions from the sculptor's foreign clientele, British in particular, in the 1820s. The passion for music and painting of Mary Temple Bowdoin, who died in Pisa in 1821, is evoked in the bas-relief by the cithara and the palette hanging on the stone. The model bears traces of a sarj colouring, that is to say, a patina that was used to feign the colour of bronze, and applied directly on the plater without a preparatory base.
