This marble head of Aphrodite was discovered in 2000 near the north walls of Amathous. It is an exceptional work of art and a rare example of marble Hellenistic sculpture found in Cyprus. The head, sculpted out from a seperate block of white marble, would have been affixed to the body (now missing) with a metal clamp. The smooth surfaces and the gentle expression of the face, the half-closed eyes with a distant gaze and the soft smile, are the characteristics of a group of Hellenistic sculptures of the goddess Aphrodite, which follow the tradition of Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Knidos.
