Born in 1509, Giovanni Maria Memmo studied at the University of Padua and afterwards returned to Venice, where he held imporant public and political offices in the Serenissima. He was also a man of letters. At the age of 60, he left his political activity and went to Padua where he lived for ten years. Feeling homesick, he went back to Venice where he died soon after (1579). His statue, the work of the sculptor Giovanni Ferrari from Treviso, was commissioned by Duke Pietro Curlandia and erected in 1787.
