Although purpotedly found in Yemen, this double-sided inscribed gravestone was initally made in Cambay, a port city in the western Indian state of Gujurat. The inscription includes blessings and Qur'anic verses in Arabic, many of which commonly appear on funerary architecture. The name of the deceased (Abu'l Hasan Ali ibn Uthman) appears on one side of the panel, but the accompanying date is not legible. The gravestone displays a number of features associated with the 'Cambay style', in particular the mosque lamp motif. Gravestones carved in Cambay were popular abroad, especially in Arabia and Yemen, between 1300 and 1500.
