This is a bust from a larger herm pillar sculpture created from an original bust found in 1525 near to the Porta del Popolo in Rome. From the sixteenth century, the kings of France were given ancient Italian diplomatic gifts. In 1604, Henri IV brought together the French Royal Collections, a set of these antiquities in the Louvre curated by Colbert and Louvois, they aimed to increase the royal collection for Louis XIV. The bust was thought to be made in the 2nd Century AD, where the herm was produced in the seventeenth century AD.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
