Title Bell of the Cansignorio della Scala Artist Maestro Jacopo (1366-1385) Date 1370 Medium Bronze Dimensions x Accession # 379.00 Credit From the Torre del Gardello, Verona This bell almost certainly dates from the twelfth century, but in the second half of the fourteenth century the Scaligeri renovated the tower, typical of fortress-houses of the Middle-Ages: this was the first clock tower with a bell in Verona. After the restorations to the clock tower this bell was inserted in 1379, the admirable work of Maestro Jacobo, a popular bronze smelter at the time. Engraved on the bell is the relief of the Scala family coat of arms, the image of a fisherman from San Zeno and inscriptions in Gothic characters. The bell is now kept in Castelvecchio.   This object is part of "Scan The World".
